Join Us for Our Longest Day Activities!

As a community that provides both assisted living and memory care, MorningStar of Boulder partners with the Alzheimer’s Association throughout the year in support of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.  Our activities include raising awareness and funds as well as having a good time along the way with our residents and their families and friends.

This year we will again celebrate the Summer Solstice with a day filled with the “Longest Day” activities on June 21st.  In fact we will not be alone as it is expected that thousands of people across the country and even the world will join together to raise funds and awareness for care and support that helps advance research toward the first survivor of Alzheimer’s.  At MorningStar of Boulder, residents will start the day with a Purple Pancake Breakfast and take part in a Lavender Zumba class on our library patio.

We will then follow up with a Hand Print Legacy event and a fun Summer Solstice BBQ that is open to guests on the dining room patio.  Our day will also include Remember Me Pottery Painting and creating Gratitude Journals.  The fun-filled, meaningful day ends with a Magenta Memories Dinner and a special evening movie.

The Alzheimer’s Association estimates that over 50 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer's, and the team at MorningStar of Boulder feels honored to help care for our most tender residents within our Reflections Neighborhood.  With 46 suites devoted to the individualized care of those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, our compassionate team is committed to finding ways to connect with the essence of the person regardless of their level of impairment.  Our community is equipped to provide care from the onset of the disease right through to the most advanced stages.

Our Boulder community also offers 48 assisted living suites, with spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans.  Please visit our website to learn more, and while you are there, set up a tour or use our email form to find out about pricing and availability.

Are Alzheimer’s In-home Testing Kits Reliable or a Good Idea?

With more and more research coming to light in terms of genetic links to a variety of diseases including Alzheimer’s, we are faced with the dilemma of whether we want to know about it beforehand.  Dr. Isaacson, director of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic at Weill Cornell Medicine’s Neurology Department in New York, says that dealing with the knowledge of an impending disease like Alzheimer’s years before a person is ill may not be productive.  He states that, “While genetic testing predicts risk, it certainly does not diagnose whether dangerous plaques or other symptoms of Alzheimer’s already exist in the brain,” and “implementing prevention measures early-on may be a better option than genetic testing”

So what does genetic testing for Alzheimer’s tell a person?  For one thing, even if the ApoE4 gene is discovered, a person may be at risk for Alzheimer’s but not necessarily develop the disease.  Issues such as inflammation, obesity and other factors may need to be present before the disease can occur.  So if you get a positive result for the ApoE4 gene, it has not taken into account these other factors.

Researchers say a better solution is to focus on tests that can detect the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s.  Right now a test is available but it is very expensive.  The advantage to discovering pre-Alzheimer’s in people still in their 40s or 50 is that early interventions and treatments can be started.

MorningStar at RidgeGate’s Reflections Neighborhood provides the area with quality, compassionate memory care.   We have 29 secure suites and can care for someone in the early onset of the disease right through to the most advanced stages.  Please visit our website to learn about our individualized care as well as pricing and availability information.

MorningStar at RidgeGate provides the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amidst a peaceful setting.  Please contact us to set up a tour of the area’s finest senior living in Lone Tree and convenient to Highlands Ranch.

Seniors Find Benefits in Assisted Living Communities

Many seniors are pleasantly surprised to discover that assisted living is not such a “terrible place” after all but rather a true home that offers many benefits.  Several studies also back up this assertion and have found that for many seniors, community living is a healthier, safer and more agreeable alternative to living alone.

Initially it can be difficult for seniors to leave their familiar family home and often mistakenly think moving into an assisted living community will mean the end of their independence.  Actually the opposite ends up being true as when a senior receives the proper care he or she needs, they are able to lead a fuller life.

Another reason seniors can be reluctant to make the move is they do not realize that assisted living communities of today are not anything like nursing homes.  As a resident of an assisted living community, you not only will have your own private suite but an array of care options and amenities that are designed to provide your utmost comfort and security.

In many cases assisted living is a much better option than trying to patch together the range of services the senior needs from in-home care providers.  Furthermore, assisted living communities are already set up to accommodate those who may have mobility difficulties, and it can be expensive to retrofit a private home to make it safe enough for a senior with physical limitations.  In addition, assisted living communities such as MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care at Jordan provide 24/7 care and offer residents as well as their families the peace of mind knowing help is close at hand in an emergency.

Please see our website for contact information and to learn why assisted living or memory care may be the right decision for you or your loved one.

More Seniors are Living to 100 Years

With better nutrition and healthcare, more and more seniors are living well into their nineties and beyond.  A recent study reports that the number of Americans age 65 or older increased tenfold during the last century and today’s seniors are not only living longer but more comfortably and in better health.  In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported there were 72,197 Americans aged 100 or older, which is up more than 44 percent from 2000, when there were only 50,281 centenarians.

By 2050, it is estimated that 4 percent of the population will be 85 years or older, which is ten times the amount of people alive at that age in 1950.  Furthermore, researchers say that on average, one in twenty women today who are age forty will live to celebrate their 100th birthday (one in ten girls born today will live past 100).  For men, the number is one in forty who are age forty today that can expect to live to 100 (one in twenty boys born today will live past 100).

Experts also report that approximately one-half of seniors will pay out-of-pocket for long-term care services and support (LTSS).  Right now $300 billion a year is spent on LTSS and the money comes from the individuals themselves, private insurance, and government programs.  To provide the care needed for the elderly and those with disabilities, the number of caregivers has increased by almost 300,000 from 2007 to 2012 to total 911,311.

Harvard researchers found that one of the top reasons for healthier seniors is “improved medical treatment, especially better cardiovascular health and vision care.”  Commonly prescribed drugs such as statins and other heart medications have reduced disability from heart disease and cataract surgery has helped to improved seniors’ eyesight.

Of course when seniors do require a little help to safely grow old, assisted living provides the level of care needed while still allowing the person to retain their independence.  Please contact MorningStar at Jordan for more information about our senior living community

Activities and Outings that are Both Fun and Informative

One look at the MorningStar of Boulder’s June calendar and you will see a range of wellness programs and activities that are as diverse as they are fun.   This month alone we will be busy visiting all kinds of places that allow our residents to get out and about and see the world.

One of our outings is a trip to a local park for a picnic where we will enjoy Boulder’s beautiful weather as well as partake of tasty treats from Jason's Deli.  One Friday a group of MorningStar residents will go to the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), a locally based federal research and development center devoted to service, research and education in the atmospheric and related sciences.  We also have plans to take a scenic drive through the gorgeous Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, a 16,000-acre National Wildlife Refuge just northeast of downtown Denver.

In-house activities include a Friday afternoon Gourmet Wine Tasting and Cheese event in our Life Enrichment Room.  For Father’s Day, we will host a mid-morning brunch and Car Show in the Magnolia Dining Room that is open to residents’ families and friends.   Throughout the month, we will also be treated to live entertainment from several local musicians as well as a Storying Telling with Nina.

At MorningStar of Boulder, we recognize that just because our residents may need a little extra help with their daily personal care; it does not mean that they do not want to lead active, purposeful lives.  Our wellness programs and monthly activities are designed to engage residents physically, intellectually, spiritually and socially.  Please visit our website to learn more about the best assisted living and memory care in and around Boulder.

Our Brain Needs a Workout Too!

Researchers have discovered it is just as important for aging adults to stay mentally active as it is to stay physically active.  Our bodies do not only lose muscle over time but our brains can also atrophy.  The website, Everyday Health explains it as, “More specifically, your brain's cognitive reserve — its ability to withstand neurological damage due to aging and other factors without showing visible signs of slowing or memory loss — diminishes through the years.”

After extensive studies, scientists now believe that regular, targeted brain exercises can increase your brain's cognitive reserve.  Some of the best brain boosters include learning or engaging in creative activities such as playing an instrument, art, or dance.  One study involved monitoring the brain activity of 1,000 musicians during rest as well as while they were playing their instruments.  The musicians’ brains “lit up in all areas, and synapses fired at rates hundreds of times more than when resting” while playing their instruments.  Also the heightened brain activity continued for up to 12 hours after they stopped playing.

In addition mind games, puzzles and memory games are fun way to help seniors keep their brains exercised. Memory games, scrabble and crosswords help improve recall and board games typically require counting, strategy and decision-making.

For those comfortable using a computer, there are many games specifically designed to improve memory.  At MorningStar at RidgeGate, we have a desktop computer available in our Reading Room as well as offer the revolutionary “It’s Never 2 Late” technology. This state-of-the-art engagement system combines touchscreen computers with intuitive, picture-based software and has a library of over 3,000 choices of things to do and explore.

Another good brain exercise is learning a new language.  Reading also can open doors to places that seniors may be unable to travel to and can heighten imagination and introduce new ideas.

Please visit MorningStar at RidgeGate’s website to learn more about our senior living community as well as our wellness programs and activities.  Our community has a total of 224 suites of which 124 are independent living, 71 assisted living, 29 secure suites in our Reflections Neighborhood dedicated to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

A Healthy Lifestyle Has Benefits at Any Age

Since Americans are living longer, it is more important than ever to take care of yourself to ensure your later years are good ones.  The National Institute of Health (NIH) explains there are real benefits to a healthy lifestyle and adds that it is never too late to begin.  Another recently published study by Sian Robinson, a professor of nutritional epidemiology at the University of Southampton, also emphatically states that, "Improving the quality of your diet can have a beneficial effect on health, whatever your age."

Experts advise that one of the best things older adults can do to stay healthy is to eat a balanced diet and to keep their minds and bodies active.  Other healthy habits include not smoking, getting regular checkups and learning how to prevent falls.

At the FamilyDoctor.org website, they remind seniors that even small changes such as daily physical activity can make a difference.  Moreover as you increase your physical activity, it will help to strengthen your bones and muscles, which in turn can help prevent falls.  If you do fall, stronger bones are less susceptible to breaking.

Participating in routine physical activity also helps your brain and studies indicate that people who regularly exercise make better decisions.  In fact exercise is so important to our health that experts say the benefits outweigh the risk of an exercise-related injury.  Even chronic health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease may improve with exercise.   The NIH does suggests that seniors new to exercising start slowly; and before you begin any new exercise, consult your health care provider.

Another easy-to-do tip from Family Doctor is to eat food high in fiber.  Not only does it help your colon work better but it may help to reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.  Some research suggests it may help to lower your cholesterol levels.   Whatever healthy changes you decide to incorporate into your everyday life should help you feel better and can be done over a period of time.

A Tour Allows You to Really Get to Know Us

Our gallery pictures do a very good job of showing off MorningStar at RidgeGate’s gorgeous senior living community, but to really get an ideal of what we are all about, we encourage you to schedule a tour.  Located on our home page is a link to “Schedule a Tour” that takes just a few minutes to fill out.  If you plan to tour a couple of senior living communities, you may want to read a few articles on the Internet regarding things to look for on your tour.

An onsite tour is important for many reasons and gives you the chance to experience it with your own eyes, ears, and instincts.  Remember this may be the place where you or your loved decide to make their new home.  A tour also allows you to evaluate the community for cleanliness and to get an idea of the daily routine of the residents.  Additionally you will get to meet the staff and talk to residents.

Some of the questions you will want to ask include information regarding staff members’ credentials and have they gone through background checks or received any special training.   Does the staff seem friendly and do residents appear to be well cared for and happy?  If you can, eat a meal at the community as it gives you an idea of the quality of food as well as time to visit with staff and residents.

At MorningStar at RidgeGate, we recommend that you plan on spending at least 45 minutes with us during your tour.  You are welcome to join us for lunch (please let us know when you set up the tour) and if you do, please allow approximately 90 minutes so you can enjoy your meal.  We will tailor your visit to your priorities and let us know if you have any special concerns.  Once you complete our online form, we will get back to you ASAP to set up a convenient time to come and visit our beautiful community.

Boulder’s Dedicated and Compassionate Leadership Team

At MorningStar of Boulder, we are committed to providing residents with the very best care and creating a community that feels like a true “home.”   As you know, an organization’s standard of excellence typically starts at the top, and at MorningStar of Boulder this is certainly true with our exceptional leadership team.

Brianna Westlake has been the Executive Director of Boulder for over a year now and brings to our community her passion for serving seniors.  She says seniors teach her humility, kindness and above all, an appreciation for the seasons of life, and feels incredibly lucky to have an opportunity to make a difference in their lives.  With over ten years of experience in customer service, human services, and nonprofit administration & marketing, MorningStar of Boulder feels lucky to have her.

Another part of the membership team is Brittany Rochlitz, who serves as our Wellness Director.  Brittany’s enthusiasm for working with seniors began with her relationship with her grandmother who had been hospitalized as a child with polio and isolated for over a year from her family.  The grandmother’s stories to Brittany included how the nursing staff made her feel like family and treated her with respect and dignity. These stories helped motivate Brittany to pursue a career in nursing as she too wanted an opportunity to have a positive impact on people’s lives.

Shelly Stewart-Girton serves as Boulder’s Director of Community Relations and early-on in her life enjoyed spending time with her grandmother and listening to her stories about their family history.  By the time Shelly finished nursing school, she knew she wanted to have a career that included serving seniors.  As she eloquently says “so the wonderful and wise storytelling can continue to bless my life.”

While the three extraordinary women comprise our leadership, MorningStar of Boulder also has a loving team of caregivers that also feel privileged to serve.  We invite you to visit our website for more information regarding our community.  We offer 48 private assisted living suites as well as 46 suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to the individualized care of those with memory impairment.
