An Active Social Life is Beneficial for Seniors
The National Council on Aging reports that just as regular preventive medical screenings, vaccinations and dental exams are vital to maintaining our best health, so is protecting our social and mental health. Studies show older adults who say they feel isolated are affected in several negative ways.
Researchers explain there is a connection between those who say they have a good social life with a longer life span. Studies indicate it may be because these are people who appear to handle stress better; something that is linked to cardiovascular disease.
Studies also find seniors who report having a better quality social life were more likely to regularly exercise. Another concerning finding is that isolation is linked to an increase in a person’s risk for anxiety and depression, which are both linked to a higher risk for dementia.
Many seniors living alone have lost a spouse or other close family members and friends and feel very alone. Experts say if this is your situation, they suggest checking with your local senior center, church or library about interesting activities they may sponsor; or look into joining a book club, gardening club or other hobby groups. If you are an animal lover, think about adopting a pet as they provide companionship and a sense of purpose. Volunteer work is another thing that not only keeps you busy but brings more meaning into your life.
One really good way to feel less alone is to move to a senior living community such as MorningStar at RidgeGate. Our beautiful home offers a variety of options for independent living, assisted living or memory care. The Impact of Sleep Apnea on Senior Health
Sleep apnea can disrupt more than just a good night’s sleep—it can significantly impact overall health, especially for seniors. Understanding this common condition is essential for those in assisted living for better sleep and long-term wellness.
What Is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts throughout the night. The most common type, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), occurs when the throat muscles relax and block the airway.Common symptoms include:
- Loud snoring
- Gasping for air during sleep
- Morning headaches
- Daytime fatigue
How Sleep Apnea Affects Seniors
Increased Risk of Heart Problems
Sleep apnea can strain the cardiovascular system, leading to high blood pressure, arrhythmias, and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke.Cognitive Decline
Interrupted sleep reduces oxygen levels in the brain, affecting memory, focus, and overall cognitive health.Reduced Energy Levels
Daytime sleepiness caused by poor sleep can limit physical activity and lead to a more sedentary lifestyle.Worsened Chronic Conditions
Sleep apnea can exacerbate conditions like diabetes, as disrupted sleep impacts blood sugar regulation.Treatment Options for Sleep Apnea
Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)
A CPAP machine keeps your airway open by delivering a constant flow of air through a mask. It’s the gold standard for treating moderate to severe sleep apnea.Lifestyle Changes
Maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding alcohol before bedtime, and sleeping on your side can help reduce symptoms.Oral Appliances
Custom-made devices that reposition the jaw or tongue can help keep the airway open during sleep.Surgical Options
In severe cases, surgery may be recommended to remove excess tissue or reposition the jaw.Supporting Sleep Health in Communities
In senior living communities in Centennial, staff members work with residents to ensure their sleep apnea is managed effectively. Many communities also provide access to sleep specialists and CPAP support to improve residents’ quality of life.Simple Steps to Improve Sleep
Even without a formal diagnosis, these tips can promote better sleep quality:- Stick to a consistent bedtime routine.
- Avoid heavy meals or caffeine in the evening.
- Create a dark, quiet, and comfortable sleeping environment.
Better Sleep, Better Health

How to Layer Clothing for Maximum Warmth and Comfort
Staying warm during colder months doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort or style. For seniors living in assisted living in Centennial, mastering the art of layering can keep you cozy and comfortable, whether you’re enjoying a brisk morning walk or relaxing indoors. Let’s explore how to layer effectively and make the most of your winter wardrobe.
The Basics of Layering
Layering is all about combining different clothing pieces to trap heat and keep cold air out. Here’s a simple breakdown:
Base Layer: Stay Dry
The layer closest to your skin should wick away moisture to keep you dry. Look for lightweight fabrics like merino wool, silk, or moisture-wicking synthetics. Cotton isn’t ideal since it absorbs moisture, leaving you feeling damp and chilly.Middle Layer: Stay Warm
This is your insulation layer, trapping body heat. Think fleece pullovers, down vests, or thicker sweaters. Choose breathable materials that keep you warm without making you overheat.Outer Layer: Stay Protected
The outer layer shields you from wind, rain, or snow. Opt for water-resistant or waterproof jackets with hoods to keep you dry and comfortable outdoors.4 Tips for Comfort and Mobility
1. Choose Lightweight Fabrics
Bulky clothes can be heavy and restrict movement. Instead, go for lightweight options like thermal tops and insulated jackets that provide warmth without the bulk.2. Keep Extremities Covered
Heat escapes quickly from your head, hands, and feet. Wear a warm hat, gloves, and thick socks to retain body heat.3. Don’t Forget Scarves
A cozy scarf can seal the gap between your jacket and neck, blocking out chilly drafts.4. Layer Loosely
Tight layers can reduce circulation, making you feel colder. Make sure each layer fits comfortably over the other. How to Adjust Layers Indoors
For residents in senior living, layering isn’t just for going outside—it’s also great for keeping comfortable indoors. Rooms can feel warmer or cooler depending on the time of day, so try these tricks:- Use a thin cardigan or shawl for easy on-and-off comfort.
- Switch to breathable layers if you’re active inside, like during yoga or crafting sessions.
Simplifying Your Wardrobe
Layering doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s how to build a versatile winter wardrobe:- Invest in Quality Basics: Durable thermal tops, fleece pullovers, and waterproof jackets are worth the cost.
- Stick to Neutral Colors: Neutral tones make it easier to mix and match layers.
- Use Accessories for Style: Hats, scarves, and gloves can add a pop of color and personality.
Warmth Meets Wellness
Staying warm in assisted living communities isn’t just about comfort—it’s also important for your health. In cold weather, the risk of illnesses like hypothermia increases, especially for seniors. Proper layering helps regulate your body temperature and reduces the risk of cold-related health issues.Layering is more than a practical winter trick—it’s a way to stay active, safe, and stylish during the colder months. With the right approach, you’ll be prepared for any weather while enjoying your daily routines.

Personality Changes Associated with Dementia
We know a person changes in several ways when living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. Memory problems and confusion are some of the most commonly known symptoms, but there are other behaviors just as common that can be unsettling and disruptive. The Medical News Today reports on the various behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia known as BPSDs.
Research suggests as many as 97% of people with dementia have one or more of the following symptoms: agitation; anxiety, psychosis, depression, apathy, irritability and/or physical or verbal aggression. Agitation may include behaviors such as pacing, wandering, restlessness and fidgeting. Repetitive movements and sleep disturbances are also common. Understanding these changes and learning strategies to deal with them can result in better care for the patient and make it easier for caregivers to cope.
Doctors are not sure why dementia patients suffer from psychosis but suggest it could be due to interruptions and changes to neurotransmitters such as dopamine, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and serotonin. Along with these interferences to brain waves, many dementia patients also suffer from poor memory and impaired visuospatial abilities, which can confuse the person as to what is real and what isn’t.
Sleep disturbances can come in the form of hypersomnia with symptoms of reversed sleep-wake patterns and fragmented sleep. Another problem can be rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder. To help combat sleep disturbances, experts recommend limiting naps during the daytime and exposing the person to daylight (especially morning light) and getting physical exercise.
If you are a family caregiver, it is important to reach out and get help. The Alzheimer’s Association is a good resource for both information and support as is the person’s healthcare team.
Along with assisted living, MorningStar at Jordan provides individualized care for those with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. Good Sleep is Important for Good Health
The American Heart Association offers a checklist of eight key measures for improving and maintaining cardiovascular health. Life’s Essential 8 is designed to highlight things we can do to lower our risk for heart disease, stroke and other major health problems.
In 2022, the Association added sleep duration to the list as a component of heart health. They say the amount and quality of sleep can influence a person’s eating habits, mood, memory, internal organs and more.
One advantage to getting enough sleep is being more productive. After spending years working long hours to the detriment of a good night’s sleep, Ariana Huffington now says, “The irony is that a lot of people forgo sleep in the name of productivity. But in fact our productivity is reduced substantially when we’re sleep deprived.”
Professor of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Charles Czeisler, explains being sleep deprived can impair your abilities and is like being drunk. Poor sleep habits can cause you to eat more to feel more energetic, and may increase your risk for high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
It is recommended adults get a solid 7 to 9 hours of sleep each day and a sleep routine will help you achieve this goal. Start by going to bed each night around the same time so you can wake up refreshed at the same time each morning. If possible, open your curtains to let in the morning sunshine or turn on the bedroom lights. Research still shows breakfast is the most important meal of the day and should consist of healthy foods.
Another thing to get your day off right is to take a few minutes each morning doing something like practicing mindfulness or yoga. The other Life’s Essential 8 include maintaining a healthy diet, fitness, quitting nicotine, losing weight, and watching your cholesterol, blood pressure and risk for diabetes.
