Assisted Living May Improve Your Quality of Life

If you or a loved one has started to slow down a bit and needs a little help with day-to-day activities or could benefit from more companionship and socialization, assisted living may be the answer.  Sometimes older adults resist the idea of assisted living as they think they will lose their independence and freedom but this could not be further from the truth.  Making the move to an assisted living community like MorningStar at Jordan actually improves the quality of life for many seniors.

If you are picturing dark and dreary assisted living facilities like your grandparent’s nursing home years ago, you need to update yourself to today’s modern senior communities available in the Denver area.  We suggest visiting MorningStar at Jordan’s website and follow the link to our Gallery where you will find stunning interior and exterior photos.  Also follow our links to a list of amenities and floor plans.

In addition, as a resident of MorningStar, you will get three daily meals that are meticulously prepared largely from scratch by our Executive Chef.  Each meal is both nutritional and delicious and we modify recipes to address a number of different dietary restrictions including low sodium or low fat, sugar-free, no sugar, and vegetarian options.

MorningStar at Jordan offers 55 assisted living suites on three levels, with spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans.  In addition, we have 29 secure suites devoted to the care of seniors with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Visit our website to learn more.

Improve Your Balance to Help Prevent Falls

Assisted Living Homes
It is important for older adults to take precautions to prevent falls as the resulting injuries tend to be more serious such as a broken hip or head trauma.  However doctors also point out that being sedentary is bad for our health regardless of how old we are and it is important to keep moving.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) reports that one out of every four Americans aged 65 and older falls every year but say there are things that seniors can do to help prevent a fall.  The trick is to find a way to safely move about while taking into account any balance issues you may experience.
As many adults are less active as they get older, it can exacerbate the physical effects of aging.

Experts say, “Failure to engage in even mild exercise on a regular basis results in reduced muscle strength, decreased bone mass, loss of balance and coordination, and reduced flexibility.”  Other issues that can lead to falls include poor eyesight and taking medications with side-effects such as drowsiness, dizziness and low blood pressure. Chronic health conditions including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and arthritis as well as problems with numbness in the feet can also increase the risk of falls.

The good news is there are a variety of easy-to-do exercises that can help seniors improve their balance. Even if you rely on a cane or other assistive devices, balance exercises can improve your mobility.  While many assisted living facilities such as MorningStar of Boulder offer a variety of exercise options, there are also some that can be done throughout the day right at home. One example is to try standing on one foot while close to the kitchen counter.  If you need, keep your hand on the counter for support and as you feel more confident try taking your hand off. Another thing you can do is to try and get up from a chair without using your arms.

MorningStar of Boulder represents the very best in assisted living facilities with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” We are dedicated to providing a true home for residents amidst a beautiful, serene setting by creating a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Please contact us to set up a tour to see firsthand our exceptional community.

Study Shows How to Age Well

morningstar general 12
The longest, most comprehensive study ever done on aging by the Harvard Study of Adult Development has turned up some unexpected results.  The study, which began in the 1930s, examined more than 800 men and women from adolescence into old age. The purpose of the research is to find clues to the participants’ behaviors that translate into happy and healthy longevity.

George Vaillant, MD, director of the Harvard study and senior physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, states that, "I had expected that the longevity of your parents, the quality of your childhood, and your cholesterol levels would be very influential.  So I was very surprised that these particular variables weren't more important than they were."

Another commonly held belief regarding aging well has typically included avoiding stress.  However, the results from the study indicate that stressful events did not predict future health and that some people who have had a lot of stress have aged quite well despite it.  The important thing seems to be how well you deal with the stress.

The Harvard study also found that genetics may not play as big of a role in how well we age as do things such as not smoking or overeating, maintaining a healthy body weight, and developing good coping skills.  Exercising, keeping good social connections, and being a life-long learner are additionally all precursors to a healthy longevity. If fact, the overriding conclusion of the study appears to be that we have more control over our longevity that we may have thought in the past.
MorningStar of Boulder is senior community that takes our residents wellbeing very seriously. Our signature wellness program, WellStar, is designed to enhance health and wellness, stimulate the brain and encourage social connections.  Please visit our website to learn why we are a step above other assisted living companies.

Learn More About Assisted Living

If you are new to the concept of assisted living, and are unsure of the difference between other senior living options including independent living, MorningStar at Jordan is here to help.   Not only is our staff happy to answer any questions but our extensive website helps educate potential families on what our community is all about and provides information on our company’s history, vision, and mission.

To start with, assisted living offers various levels of support with the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing and other support services including meals, transportation and wellness activities in a residential setting.  Independent living is for seniors who enjoy the benefits offered by community living including predictable budgeting, companionship, and activities; but do not require assistance with personal care.  A nursing home is unlike assisted living as it is designed for people requiring around-the-clock nursing care.

When you visit our website, be sure to check out our FAQs found under our “Family Resources” tab.  We supply answers to many of the questions you probably have as well as a little background regarding the MorningStar Senior Living Company.  You will also find important information on how we determine your loved one’s level of care and reassurances regarding our commitment to regularly re-evaluate care plans to keep up with changing needs.

Moreover, we can help residents find a primary care doctor or specialty health care providers such as Occupational Therapists or Physical Therapists. When needed, we provide transportation to doctor appointments with vehicles that accommodate walkers or wheelchairs.

Our FAQs gives a quick overview of the training our Care Managers receive, which includes an orientation program (and a three-day shadow), Radiance culture training, 8-hour dementia training, and ongoing training in specific care needs.  Our Medication Managers are trained Qualified Medication Administration Persons (QMAP).

This is just a sampling of what you will learn on our website, but we would also love to hear from you personally as well as help you set up a tour.  For those families struggling with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, we are also an experienced, compassionate memory care facility.

MorningStar at Jordan’s mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we offer our residents the best assisted living and memory care facility in the area.

Is Your Parent Safe Living Alone?

Many older adults cling to the idea of living in their own home and stubbornly refuse to accept the fact that their declining medical conditions may be putting their very safety at risk in their present living situation.  This is when family members need to step in and help make some decisions.

In the best scenario, we typically want to make changes in things as important as our living situation with careful thought, but unfortunately, many older adults do not have such plans in place.  This reluctance to plan ahead means lots of families are unaware of today’s various senior living options, which include assisted living facilities, independent living, skilled nursing facilities, family group homes, memory care, and continuing care communities.

As you sort through the best care options for your parent, start by honestly assessing their medical conditions, their mobility, and care requirements.  In addition, experts say to try and determine what the future holds for your loved one as you do not want to get them settled into a home and quickly realize it is not equipped to provide the care they now need.

One senior living option is assisted living, which is designed to provide your parent help with their ADLs (activities of daily living) in order to allow them to live as independently as possible.  Most assisted living communities have tiered levels of care, which means as your parent’s needs increase the community will be able to address them.

At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Jordan, located in Centennial CO, we work hard to create a true “home” for our residents.  We define health and well-being holistically and offer services and programming that supports the whole person: body, mind and spirit. Veteran’s Aid & Attendance Benefit for Assisted Living

ms joint 2
MorningStar of Boulder is pleased to provide families with ideas for additional financial solutions beyond traditional retirement savings and investment income to help pay for assisted living or memory care.  On our website, you will find extensive information on several under-utilized financial benefits and resources including a full explanation of the generous “Aid & Attendance” pension from the US Department of Veteran Affairs.

Aid & Attendance is a monthly benefit payment available to certain wartime veterans and their survivors who qualify for financial need and have a doctor’s order for regular assistance with daily living activities.  To be eligible, the vet must have served for at least 90 days of active duty with at least one of those days spent serving during a period of a foreign war. Furthermore, the vet cannot have been dishonorably discharged.  The benefit does not require the vet to have served overseas, seen combat or retired from the military. Surviving spouses of the vet are also eligible for the Aid & Attendance pension if they were married to the vet at the time of their death and have not remarried.

When we find out that a vet or the family of a vet is interested in our community, we are pleased to direct them to local resources that can help to ease and quicken the application process for “Aid & Attendance.  In every state including Arizona, there is a Department of Military/Veteran Affairs staffed with Veteran Service Officers (VSOs) who will help you complete the 41-page Aid & Attendance application free of charge. The approval process typically takes 3 to 4 months.
Throughout our many MorningStar communities, we are privileged to have veterans from all five branches of military service call us home.  Please visit our website and take a look at our Family Resources information regarding ways to finance assisted living facilities including “Aid & Attendance” pension benefits for Veterans.

MorningStar at Jordan’s Approach to Memory Care

At MorningStar at Jordan, we not only provide assisted living but are also an experienced memory care facility.  Our Reflections Neighborhood has 29 secure suites dedicated to residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.   MorningStar’s compassionate team expertly provides the care your loved one requires for their utmost comfort, wellness and safety.

Our holistic approach to memory care is done through our program we call “Lavender Sky.”  By utilizing our extensive understanding of dementia, it provides the tools to empower and equip our team to advance our vision and mission of providing a more insightful way to support the memory-impaired and their families.

All of our employees receive training in the program as we understand knowledge provides greater wisdom and insight into interacting with our most tender residents.  The eight hours of training includes the pathology behind the disease as well as communication techniques, and holistic solutions to dining, safety and challenging behaviors.

Through Lavender Sky, our caregivers thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the “purple world” of dementia as they crossover the physical and emotional boundaries that would otherwise separate us. By exploring each of our residents’ life stories including their history and preferences, we create an individualized care plan. We also involve and engage family members in how to follow our lead.

Please visit our website for more information regarding our experienced, compassionate memory care.  While many senior communities may offer memory care, we consider it our calling to care for our very special residents.  At MorningStar at Jordan, we do not consider serving our memory care residents to be depressing but rather offer hope to families as we strive to find ways to elevate and celebrate each resident’s life.

MorningStar at Jordan’s mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Having a Purpose Contributes to Wellness

There are several studies that suggest a purposeful life is associated with better physical and mental health and an overall improvement in quality of life.  Seniors age 65 years and older who report having a purpose in life and tangible goals appear to have an increased life span, lower risk of disease, better sleep and healthier outcomes for stroke incidence, post-stroke quality of life, depression and diabetes.

Evidence comes from several long-term studies including The Health and Retirement Study (HRS), which collected data, including information from U.S. adults age 51 to 61 regarding life purpose and other psychological well-being constructs for almost 30 years.  The recently published conclusion and relevance report states “a stronger purpose in life was associated with decreased mortality and that purposeful living may have health benefits.”  Researchers suggest future studies focus on evaluating the association of life purpose interventions with health outcomes, including mortality, to seek more knowledge on how life purpose influences health outcomes.

Another national study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health analyzed the functioning grip strength and walking speed in participants age 50 years and older.   Study participants that reported a higher sense of purpose in life were found to have better walking speeds even after researchers controlled for preexisting health conditions, depression and health behaviors.  Authors of the study report their findings suggest that “sense of purpose, a modifiable factor, may play an important role in maintaining physical function among older adults.”

At MorningStar at Jordan, we recognize the importance of our residents living meaningful lives.  Our wellness programs focus on mental, physical, spiritual and social connections and give our residents something to look forward to each day.  In fact, we take any excuse to have a good time, be it celebrating a holiday or a birthday as residents and team members love having a good time.  Please visit our website to learn more about our exceptional assisted living and memory care facility.

MorningStar at Jordan’s mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. If you have the heart of a caregiver and love the idea of working for an assisted living community that values both its residents as well as employees, you will be pleased to know MorningStar Senior Living is committed to doing just that.  We recognize that especially those in caregiver positions are the very heartbeat of our homes, and are the reason why we are proud to provide them with an atmosphere where they can flourish.

Right now our recruitment efforts are focused on filling a variety of assisted living jobs in the Denver area including care managers.  These are rewarding careers requiring dedicated, hard-working individuals who understand it is a privilege to provide compassionate care to our remarkable residents. Thus we seek men and women that instinctively know seniors are gifted and contributing individuals who deserve to be treated with the utmost respect.

Our open positions include full-time, reduced full-time, and part-time, and as our communities are true homes and offer residents 24/7 care, jobs include evening, night and weekend shifts.  MorningStar’s Denver area communities include: MorningStar of Arvada in Arvada; MorningStar at Jordan in Centennial; MorningStar of Littleton in Littleton; MorningStar at RidgeGate in Lone Tree; MorningStar of Wheat Ridge in Wheat Ridge; and Parker Senior Living by MorningStar in Parker.

As MorningStar care managers assist residents with their daily personal care activities, you will be encouraged to build strong relationships with them; and while you are at it, probably be surprised by how much they can offer you.  In addition you will be working alongside like-minded team members who also enjoy building our MorningStar family.

Please visit our website to read the full description of a care manager’s duties as well as to learn more about other available assisted living jobs including medication care managers/QMAPS and more.  We invite you to be part of something inspirational, profound and rewarding!

MorningStar Raises Funds for Senior Focused Organizations

MorningStar Senior Living - A True Home
At MorningStar of Boulder our goal is to provide one of the best senior retirement homes in the area. We offer 48 bright, private assisted living suites in a variety of floor plans to meet our residents’ preferences and needs.  In our Reflections Neighborhood, we provide another 46 secure suites devoted to the individualized care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.

We consider serving seniors our calling, and as we have seen firsthand the traumatizing effects of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, we join our parent company, MorningStar Senior Living in their efforts to end Alzheimer’s.   Other charitable activities will also involve senior-focused, not-for-profit organizations.

Throughout the year, our community will participate in events that help to raise funds as well as awareness for Alzheimer’s disease, and it is our honor to partner with the Alzheimer’s Association as MorningStar does in every market we serve.  Some of these activities will include getting a team together to participate in the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” event, which takes every Fall. Participants will include staff members, residents, and family members and friends who will join the fun as walkers, runners, exhibitors, and sponsors.  The 5K walk is the world's largest event and raises funds for Alzheimer's care, support and research. Each year our collective MorningStar communities have helped raise funds toward a cure.

MorningStar of Boulder also participants in the uplifting “The Longest Day” celebration, which takes place each year in June on the Summer Solstice.  It too is an effort to raise funds and awareness of Alzheimer’s along with a way to honor those suffering from the disease. The day-long event is sure to be filled with fun and entertainment as we share a message of hope and compassion.

At MorningStar of Boulder, we represent the very best in senior retirement homes with a unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve to create a true “home” for residents.  Please schedule a visit to experience firsthand our beautiful assisted living and memory care community.
