The MorningStar Community is Participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s

A group of MorningStar at RidgeGate’s residents, families and team members will travel to City Park on Saturday, September 15th to participate in Denver’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s.  In support of the Alzheimer’s Association, the annual event hopes to raise $1.35M.  The monies will be used toward research, care and treatment of families struggling with Alzheimer’s disease.  The Alzheimer's Association is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization and all donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law.  According to their website, the Alzheimer’s Association currently shows the Denver event has 1,494 participants and 385 teams already registered.

Our community also enjoyed participating in our “Longest Day of Play” event that took place on Thursday, June 21st, and raised awareness as well as money for those affected by Alzheimer’s.  Activities included a barbecue, music and a balloon launch.  We wish to thank all who participated and/or donated to such a good cause.

MorningStar at RidgeGate sits in the center of the most sought-out destinations for the broader community.  With Lake Lone Tree close by, a body of water enjoyed by citizens and waterfowl alike, Lone Tree Arts Center directly to our west, the new Douglas County library to our north, and SkyRidge Medical Center a block to our east, it is an ideal location.  We offer 124 bright suites for independent living, with penthouses as large as 1,838 square feet.  In an adjoining neighborhood, we also have 71 suites for assisted living in a choice of floor plans.  Our Reflections Neighborhood offers 29 secure suites devoted to caring for those with memory impairment from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

Please visit our website to learn more about our remarkable senior living community as well as to stay up-to-date on special events sponsored by MorningStar.  And remember even if you do not plan to attend a walk, show your support by wearing purple on September 15th!

Hobbies Encourage Seniors to Stay Active Socially, Physically & Mentally

Spending time doing things you enjoy can not only help you to stay more interested in life but may also be good for your health.  Many hobbies are enjoyed at any age and can help to exercise your mind or body (many do both) as well as provide social interactions.

Creative hobbies such as painting, sculpting, photography, scrapbooking and knitting or the performing arts are fun activities for seniors and provide lots of opportunity for socializing.  Another healthy hobby is caring for a pet according to A Place for Mom.  They explain that, “Pets provide a comfort system and actually produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that helps to lower levels of the stress-inducing hormone cortisol and increase the production of the feel-good hormone serotonin.”  Studies have shown that pet ownership may help lower cholesterol, fight depression and help protect against heart conditions.

Stretching exercises and yoga are also popular with seniors as they help improve flexibility and movement and build balance as well as improve blood flow to the brain, heart and circulatory system. Yoga classes are designed for many physical fitness levels such as chair yoga for those unable to get down on the floor.  Joining a walking group is another fun way to exercise and spend time with friendly faces.

At MorningStar of Boulder, we specialize in providing our assisted living residents with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  Every day we offer a variety of fun and engaging activities that include things such as exercise and walking groups, craft classes, games, scrapbooking, and poetry and short stories readings.  Please visit our website to learn more about our loving community and while you are there, be sure to take a look at “Scenes of Elevated, Celebrated Life.”

MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Boulder represents the best in senior living with a distinct mission statement - “to honor, to value, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve.  We are dedicated to providing a true home for residents amidst a beautiful, serene setting and invite you to schedule a visit to experience one of the area’s finest senior living communities.

Eyes Changes as You Age

As we age, our vision declines much like other parts of our bodies.   So while some loss of vision is normal, there are other signs that may be an indication of more serious medical problems.

Presbyopia is a normal condition of the eyes that starts around the age of forty and is the hardening of the lens.  It causes the eye not to focus as well on objects close at hand.  While it is easily corrected by reading glasses or multi-lens glasses, it does continue to worsen as we age.  Generally people need stronger and stronger prescriptions through the years or several different sets of glasses for different tasks.  There are surgical procedures called conductive keratoplasty or monovision lasik that can be done to correct the problem.

Cataracts, which are a clouding of the eyes’ lens, are so common among seniors and easily treated that they are now considered a normal part of the aging process. Surgery is very safe, and in most cases, the doctor removes the cloudy lens and replaces it with a plastic lens.

Glaucoma is another disease that strikes mainly older people and is caused by too much fluid pressure inside the eyes.  There is no pain associated with early stages of glaucoma and it may lead to vision loss and blindness.  It can be treated so early detection is important.

Vision Aware, the American Foundation for the Blind recommends contacting your doctor if you experience any of the following changes in your vision:

·         severe, sudden eye pain
·         recurrent pain in or around the eye
·         hazy, blurred, or double vision
·         seeing flashes of light or sudden bright floating spots
·         seeing rainbows or halos around lights
·         seeing floating "spider webs"
·         seeing a "curtain coming down" over one eye
·         sensing a "cup filling up with ink" in one eye
·         unusual, even painful, sensitivity to light or glare
·         swollen, red eyes
·         changes in the color of the iris
·         white areas in the pupil of the eye
·         sudden development of persistent floaters
·         itching, burning, or a heavy discharge in the eyes
·         any sudden change in vision

There are several other vision problems that can lead to blindness.  Macular degeneration (also called age-related macular degeneration or AMD) is one of those.  It is the leading cause of vision loss or blindness among older Americans.  The All About Vision website states: “Early signs of vision loss from AMD include shadowy areas in your central vision or unusually fuzzy or distorted vision.  An Amsler grid (used to diagnose AMD) consists of straight lines, with a reference dot in the center. Someone with macular degeneration may see some of the lines as wavy or blurred, with some dark areas at the center.”

It is very important for seniors to have regular eye check-ups and see their doctor if something changes.  Eye diseases can be very serious and early intervention is important.

MorningStar at Jordan’s WellStar Program

All of our MorningStar communities, including MorningStar at Jordan, provide our residents with our signature wellness program, WellStar.  Offering an array of creative and enriching ways to stay active and productive, our programs integrate different modalities and senses for both the body and the mind.  WellStar has five wellness components – physical, spiritual, intellectual, social, and food philosophy.

One thing that sets MorningStar apart from other senior living communities is that our entire team works together to build a true community and our WellStar programs exemplify that philosophy.  Each day, our Wellness and Life Enrichment team offers purposeful activities that are aimed to elevate the mood of our residents, reduce pain and to help them rely less on medications.

Our daily assortment of physical wellness activities are designed to meet a range of capabilities as well as a variety of interests.  We also recognize meeting the spiritual needs of our seniors is vital to their wellbeing, and as such, our chapel is open to all faiths.  MorningStar also offers non-denominational services on a regular basis along with bible study, hymn singing and group prayer.

In terms of intellectual wellness, we understand that it is important for seniors to continue to stimulate their brains, and we offer a daily dose of brain calisthenics designed to introduce new ideas and practice cognitive skills.  Furthermore, we do not neglect the importance of social wellness.  Almost everything we do at MorningStar at Jordan enriches our community and advances our goal of building a family for life.  Socializing comes in the form of organized events and activities or just informal gatherings discussing the day’s topics.

We also do not forget the philosophy that healthy, nutritious food is the centerpiece of wellness and it becomes even more critical as we age.  Our daily meals include the addition of foods that new research finds has tremendous healing power such as: berries, chocolate high in cocoa mass, Omega 3 fats, turmeric, and dark leafy greens.  Visit our website or give us a call to learn more.

Take Care When Walking Around the Community

MorningStar at RidgeGate wants to remind residents and visitors alike they need to remember that throughout our community a number of residents use walkers, electric or manual wheelchairs, and oxygen.  While these are necessary medical devices that help to keep our residents independent and functioning, we want to caution everyone that they can also be fall hazards to you as well as to other.

It is especially important to be careful when you move along the corridors at busy times including going through the dining room or during other social gatherings and events such as social hour.  We have noticed that sometimes oxygen hoses are not wrapped up and may be lying on the floor where they can become trip hazards to others.  Another thing to look out for is wheelchairs parked with their foot pedals sticking out into the walk ways.

Another thing to remember if you are traveling in an electric wheel chair is that you need to take care when backing up or moving through crowds.  In other words, we all to be aware when we move around the community and need to keep our eyes open for objects on the floor and around us to help prevent falls.

The team at RidgeGate additionally wants to remind all residents to enjoy the rest of summer and to remember to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water.  Also remember to dress appropriately when going outside – wear sunblock, a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses and long sleeves.  Stay in the shade whenever possible and avoid the heat of the day.

We invite you to visit MorningStar at RidgeGate’s website to learn more about one of the top senior living communities in Lone Tree CO.   Along with exceptional architecture and an award-winning design, our graciously-appointed common areas are extensions of our private suites, and include an art studio, eCafe, expansive gathering places, saline swimming pool, fitness center, an interior park, and reserved underground parking.

Financial and Care Planning Tools for Seniors

Especially if you are an older adult, you should have a will or trust drawn up as well as a power-of-attorney and an advanced directive.   The difference between a will and a trust is a will is a legal document that goes into effect after the person dies while a trust goes into effect as soon as it is created.  The trustor (the creator of that trust) can name others to be in charge of the trust when she or he becomes incapacitated or dies.

A living will, also known as a Health Care Directive, is a legal document in which a person specifies what actions should be taken for their health care if they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves because of illness or incapacity.  The person named as the health care authority has the power to make medical decisions and sees to it that the wishes of the person is carried out.

Another legal document many seniors find is a good idea to have is a Durable Power Of Attorney (DPOA).  The document is used if the person (the principal) ever becomes mentally incapacitated and covers both financial and medical decisions.   The attorney-in-fact or agent in effect becomes a legal guardian for the disabled principal.

These types of documents should be drawn up before a person becomes incapacitated.  If someone has a diminished capacity due to Alzheimer’s or another medical condition and needs someone to handle their medical and financial decisions, a person can pursue a legal Guardianship status for them.  Legal guardianship is granted by the courts and typically continues throughout the remainder of the person’s life.  Please refer to your financial consultant or attorney for more information.

Important Questions to Ask at Your Doctor Visit

Too often right after a visit to our doctor’s, we think of a question that we wished we had asked.  This is the reason why the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) has put together a list of questions you should take a look at before your next visit.

The purpose of the questionnaire is to facilitate better communication between a patient and their doctor, and the AHRQ stresses the fact that by asking questions and getting answers will help to improve the quality of your care.  They state that, “Talking with your doctor builds trust and leads to better results, quality, safety, and satisfaction.”  Furthermore, by preparing questions beforehand to ask your doctor, it allows you to more efficiently use your time and not feel as rushed.

Questions from the AHRQ include: what is the test for; how many times have you done this procedure; when will I get the results; and why do I need this treatment.  They also suggest that you ask if there are any alternative treatments, what are the possible complications, and which hospital is best for my needs.  Other questions include asking how to spell the name of the drug and are there are any side effects.  The last question, and an important one, is how will this new medication interact with the other medicines I am currently taking.

Experts explain that rather than being reluctant to be asked these questions that doctors and nurses actually welcome them.  It assures them that you understand the information and are actively partnering with them in your care

The AHRQ website further adds that it may be helpful to take a family member or trusted friend with you to an appointment to assist you in understanding and remembering all of the answers to your questions.  The site also offers a list of questions to think about after your appointment.

The Difference Between Assisted Living and Senior Independent Living

Often families are confused with the terms “independent living” and “assisted living” and are not sure which one is best suited for their needs.  To clarify, the term independent living is used to describe senior living communities that are designed specifically for seniors 55 and older who want to and are able to live without any help.  Assisted living is designed for seniors who still wish to live independently with personal privacy and autonomy but require a little assistance in their daily lives.

Independent living is ideal for individuals who no longer wish to maintain their own home and desire a more carefree lifestyle.  While each community can vary, many offer amenities such as social activities, day trips and meals.  Senior independent communities offer residents the freedom to enjoy their retirement years without being tied down with mowing lawns, shoveling snow and other routine chores that need to be done when owning a home.

At assisted living communities, residents get help with daily personal care and are provided with an array of services such as housekeeping, laundry, transportation, daily meals, and 24-hour supervision.  Generally, a community assesses in-coming residents to determine the level of assistance needed that is agreeable to the senior and their extended family.  Other amenities offered by assisted living communities may include a range of activities and wellness programs.

At MorningStar at Jordan, we’re proud to offer 55 suites for assisted living and 29 secure suites devoted to the individualized, specialized care for residents with Alzheimer’s Disease or other forms of dementia.  We are located in historic Centennial at Arapahoe and Jordan Roads, in the south-central area of Metro Denver. With Valley Country Club next door, we are convenient to banks, hospitals, shopping malls, grocery stores and restaurants.
